Black List / Support list April 2009

Background

First off there was a huge span between the last list and this one for 2 reasons.

Either the metagame hasn't changed significantly yet or we're in the one month buffering time that allows for analysis of the new metagame.

Each Black List and Support list released by this site remains valid until the next one. That way if a new one hasn't been released yet it's because the metagame hasn't changed significantly yet or we're waiting a month to examine the next one.

Although it did change significantly back in March, it still takes some time to see which decks will be overplayed and which ones leave little room for innovation.

It seemed unfair to post a black list or a support list without giving the decks at least a month to soak in and give them a fair chance to innovate.

Now that a month has passed and it's April, we'll move onto the new lists.

Month of April Lists

Blacklist:

  • 1) Glad Beasts
  • 2) Lightsworn
  • 3) Twilight (The Popular version with Dad, judgement, and necros)
  • 4) Plants
  • 5) Zombies

Commentary:

Glads

1) Gladiator Beasts was an obvious choice. Not only was this a less fun, cheap mans version of lightsworn, but it takes very little skill to play.

If you really want to find the players that could care less about yugioh and the game, just ask them if they play Glads in this new format.

If they say yes, bingo, you found one!

To play such a rigid, boring, and cheap deck, in one of the MOST innovative formats yugioh has had in a long time, shows how much creatitivity they lack.

You won't find many adults sinking this low, as they will definitley have the cash for lightsworn; a much more fun deck that deserves it's wins.

Lightsworn

2) Lightsworn is an interesting topic to discuss. For some reason the majority of the yugioh community felt that it would be on top this format. Regardless of how much anyone argued against this point, people were adamant.

Now with a month having gone by we've all come to the realization that lightsworn isn't on top.
Glad beasts are trumping this deck and doing it on a pretty often basis.

As to why the deck is being blacklisted, it's the same as last time. The build is too rigid to foster innovation and any true changes to the deck wouldn't count as a deck variation.

Twilight

3) The popular version of twilight that is continuously surfacing on the internet and being played at a few scattered tournaments also gets blacklisted.

Although twilight itself has a good number of ways to innovate, most people have been keeping this rigid version explained above. I'd go into more detail but I don't want more people playing the deck and if people truly want to see the popular deck build, simply go to pojo and in a few clicks you'll find it.

This popular version of twilight is simply a poor attempt at creativity.
I can imagine someone out there saying "Hey Judgement is great, and so is Dark Armed, lets put them together!!"

The saddest part of this whole story is the above popular version of twilight itself won't win much, even by your above average monarch deck.

So not only are they not winning much but they're making lack luster attempts at creativity.

Plants

4) Plants also have a good number of ways to be innovative but it's hard to spot the really unique decks that don't contain Black Garden.

Plants is very easy to think of and very easy to build. Even if it it's top tier, the average Plants build is very rigid and not many people innovate with it.

It seems that when people don't know what to build, they fall back on plants.
It's too popular an option, it stops people from innovating, and even when given the chance to innovate you continuously see the black garden build of this deck.

It's best if the community stops falling back on plants and starts creating decks that even a 10 year old yugioh player can think of.

It's either that or truly innovate this build and make a true variant of the plant build, preferably one without black garden.

Zombies

5) Zombies are still kicking it seems. Even though the number of players who use this deck have dropped there are the small few who are still running this.

Sadly this deck is as rigid as it ever was and even if there was room for innovation it would in the end kill the deck. For that reason I won't ask people to innovate the deck too much because I don't see many cards that can be traded out for new ones.

In the end Zombies is rigid and a poor excuse for a deck, especially because it will not beat lightsworn and glads consistantly. That's not to say it's not good, because it's still very powerful, but people who don't innovate play to win, and they won't get first place consistantly with zombies. That will make most of them upset and frustrated with this build and have them move onto another one that guarentees them more first place showings.

I don't see why an innovator would want to play this deck, rather than innovate something of their own which will most likely beat the regular zombie build.

Support list:

  • 2) Gear town decks
  • 4) Teleport Variants of different attributes.
  • 5) Psychic deck
  • 6) Decree, Jinzo, Trap lock-down, beat-down decks
  • 7) Warrior Toolbox variants
  • 8) Monarch variants
  • 9) Dark decks with Allure (without malicious, D Draws, or Dark armed.)
  • 10) Spellcasters (This can be really good, no one really considers it though and I'm hoping the spellcaster structure deck gets more people playing spellcasters.)
  • 11) Earth Deck
  • 12) Dragon Deck (Not a Hopeless Dragon deck)
  • 13) Stardaust Assault mode Deck
  • 14) Burn Variants, either by stalling and attacking directly with little guys (like Jinzo #7) or by card burn like Wave Motion Cannon ; or both.
  • 16) Crystal Beasts
  • 17) Prometheus and Dark Creator mid game OTK decks with Return from the Different Dimension
  • 19) Gadget Variants
  • 20) Morphotronic variants

The purpose of these lists:

Decks that leave little room for creativity/originality are blacklisted.

To use these is to use someone else's ingenuity and to, frankly, be too lazy to create your own competitive build.

You're either an innovator or a follower and these decks are clearly the decks of followers.

As for variations, these decks are too rigid to make variations to, and any few cards replaced have little to no effect on the net power of the deck. People will not change the engines in these decks and the cards they replace will not change the net outcomes of the deck.

An example of changing the engines of a deck would be like taking out D draws, mallicious, and Dark arms. In that case, whatever deck you made, would truly be a variant.

The support lists on the other hand are a guide to get ideas from.
They don't have to be followed and you don't have to build a deck listed in them.

There will be people though that just won't have any ideas as to what to build and the support list functions as a way to develop an original deck theme.

April Updates

That's all for now, come back to this article to check for any possible updates that may occur.

If any other significant shifts happen because of Raging Battle or Ancient Prophecy, we'll add them to this article. If not the next significant shift will most likely be the next ban list in September.

Look at the SJC tops in GB format, then look at Tele-DAD format.
For some reason, GB format toppers have little variety while Tele-DAD format had new toppers right from the beginning, when there was no build to netdeck off either for others, perfect ground for large teams and regulars.

LS, however, almost completely rely on milling. Sure, you can go double Charge, or Foolish, etc....But in the end, much more luck-dependant than GB, for example. That's not to say those aren't.

Also, throw Soul of Purity and Light into LS and you got Light-based deck with Honest and Soul of Purity and Light.

"Gladiator Beasts was an obvious choice. Not only was this a less fun, cheap mans version of lightsworn, but it takes very little skill to play."

This is a pretty foolish statement. I don't play GB's (so save your breath if you plan on attacking me for that) but you're frankly just wrong.

For one, Gladiator Beasts and Lightsworn are completely different decks. LS is an aggressive swarm deck with a reverse toolbox. Gladiator Beasts is an advantage based deck with the ability to lockdown (i.e. "stun") the field. So calling it the "poor man's lightsworn" is a strange statement.

Next, saying it takes "little skill" is completely bogus, and sounds just like ranting. Gladiator Beasts take a TREMENDOUS amount of skill to play. Very few decks need to consider future plays as much as GBs.

Onto the Lightsworn:

"Glad beasts are trumping this deck and doing it on a pretty often basis...The build is too rigid to foster innovation and any true changes to the deck wouldn't count as a deck variation."

Let's not even address the grammar issue with "pretty often basis."

First, GBs are not trumping this deck often, I'm not sure where you're getting this information. At the various locals I've been to, there has been a solid 50/50 win ratio between the two.

The build is most definitely NOT too rigid to foster "innovation" either. You even list twilight as another deck, when even that is typically only 5 cards different from the "standard" LS build. There have been many different innovations on the deck, such as:

-including 3x Aurkus, my body as a shield, and solemn judgment (aka Aurkus Control)

-Teching 3x Volcanic Shell and various discards like Divine Wrath and Lightning Vortex

-Using 3x Thunderking Rai-Oh

-Using Phantom of Chaos

-Using Mezuki, Zombie Master, and Pyramid Turtle
etc etc etc

People are innovating with the deck, you're just choosing not to observe it.

"Plants also have a good number of ways to be innovative but it's hard to spot the really unique decks that don't contain Black Garden."

Once again, you're just wrong. The majority of plant decks I've come across don't even USE black garden, and the ones I've seen that do have been incredibly innovative.

"Zombies are still kicking it seems. Even though the number of players who use this deck have dropped there are the small few who are still running this...I don't see why an innovator would want to play this deck, rather than innovate something of their own which will most likely beat the regular zombie build."

The regular zombie build? That's ridiculous. There is no regular zombie build because the regular zombie build had the key cards restricted. Anyone attempting to build zombies IS innovating because they're LITERALLY "not playing with a full deck."

Finally, you have the nerve to attack decks like twilight saying "they aren't winning" but then suggest decks that use slipheed or "Trap lock-down decks?" How is a trap lockdown deck going to win against a Lightsworn deck running 5 traps? Why would you build a dark deck without using Dark Armed Dragon?

Just because you're an "innovator" doesn't mean you have to attack every player who uses Gladiator Beasts (which is one of the most interesting themes this game has ever seen), and just because you're an "innovator" doesn't mean you can make statements that are completely unsupported (Because then someone like me will point out why they are incorrect.)

Overall, this article makes me very disappointed in unimetagame. I came hoping to see insightful opinions and perspectives never seen before, and instead it's just people complaining about players who use top tier decks. Being mindless about "innovation" is just as bad as being mindless about netdecking.

Thank you Andrew I was on the verge of posting a similar argument when I read yours. I believe you very effectively said exactly what needed to be said about this article. I personally do use a Glad deck and have seen great innovation over the course of the strategies life so far.

Bravo on a well written counter argument.

The only way to run lights work to make your millin more consistant is run more then 25 monsters other then that to me lights worn is a sack deck and bein the fact GB have one bestiari limits the blowing up process if bestiari was at 2 or 3 the match up between the two deck wouldnt be as even at all as it is now. but GB takes Alot more thought then lights worn ok mill oopps hit garoth wuld necro get lumina pitch for garoth set royal decree and thats the game against glad beasts

May I suggest that you put Crystal Beasts on the support list? I've always loved the Crystal Beasts, but they've always been relegated to the second tier, since they just can't keep up with the speed of the decks on your blacklist.

And I must say I agree with your decision to put Ancient Gear decks on the support list - my current deck is an ancient gear deck (mainly because of my tiny budget) and it plays pretty well - I usually end up winning the game by using Geartown.

The fact that this site even 'has' a Blacklist on decks proves how ignorant it is.

A true innovator would not care for what's winning or what's cheap, etc.

A true innovator would spend their time trying to pick at hidden tech that may yield positive results in the current game as well as provide insight to all current decktypes regardless ofd Tier that can do well.

Metagame may have been ran by UDE, but at least they never attacked anything, they never condone the use of certain decks and they certainly didn't 'blacklist' any decks. It shows how you've taken the better decks, stuck up your nose and rather than dig into them to see if you can yield some interesting new tech or variation. You dump them in a bin and move on.

Thats not innovation, thats pathetic.

all i can say is i hate GB's and the people that use them i hat more in my opinion gb's and lightsworn are copycat decks that people make or buy then use to just win not have fun but not to sound like a hypocrit i own a lightsworn deck i have fun using it also have blackwings and a plant deck that does not use black garden and also gadgets, monarchs macro basicly i have the cards to make almost any deck i want i would rather go to regionals with my own creation than my lightsworn or other top tier build but the real problem with this game is alot of decks have no chance because they are to slow or combo based and it is almost impossable to stall in this format the average custom deck will get otk'ed and in sept. gale will be knocked down to 1 and darkstrike fighter will be banned and deck devestation virus is a better card than crush card in this synchro crazy format

I ran into this site a few days ago and was rather surprised. Since Metagame bit the dust I really can't find a site that goes and talks about decks and techs as well as different strategies in the game. When I found this site I thought I finally found a good place to hang . . . until I read this article about the black list.

Don't get me wrong. I hate LS and find the deck to be mindless. There is no skill in search, search, mill, mill, drop judgment and win. I don't like seeing good players being beaten by bad players who just get lucky with LS. That said, I STILL think the choice of such a black list is stupid. Yes, LS is gay, but your counter arguements are not presented in a respectful manner. All you do is complain that they are top tier and have no room for innovation. There is NEVER a point where a deck has no innovation. Players should be looking, and encouraged to find new cards, old and new, to put in decks to try things out and find new and interesting combos that work with existing decks. That's what it is to be innovated. Yes, your arguement with being a follower makes sense, but the attitude presented in this article is completely unprofessional and just makes you out to be a ignorant fool. I myself play zombie . . . Light Zombie with skill drain. I don't see that on your list, so don't rip on me for playing a black listed deck.

Anyway, I suggest instead of black listing decks, you should start digging up interesting techs and new insight to arlready existing decks and decks that are just missing that ONE card to break the deck wide open. Yes, be innovated, strive for something different; create the next big deck, but before that; seriously reconsider the way you choose to vocalize your points and arguments.
